Watford have received an enquiry for Adrian Mariappa from Premier League newcomers Reading, we understand.

There has been speculation linking the Hornets Player of the Season with a move to the Madejski Stadium but if a firm offer is received, it is unlikely that any deal would be concluded soon as the defender is currently on international duty with Jamaica.

The renewed top-flight interest in the 25 year old, who has a year remaining on his current deal at Vicarage Road, is not a surprise on the back of an impressive campaign, during which Newcastle United and Wigan Athletic bid for him in January.

Speaking to the Watford Observer before the end of the season, Mariappa confirmed he was “happy to stay” but said: “No I can’t really say there have been any decisions yet. Football is a funny old game and you don’t know what could happen because things change in a short space of time.

“The way I looked at it during the speculation in January was just to concentrate on training and games and take each game as it came. If anything arises, then deal with it. That is how I have always looked at it and that is how I will look at in the future.”
