England international Kelly Smith admits she is not sure where she will be playing her club football this year following the cancellation of the 2012 Women’s Professional Soccer League in America.
The Watford-born forward was due to return to her club Boston Breakers in just over a month’s time but has been forced to reassess her options following the announcement.
The timing of the news was unfortunate given the fact Smith has Euro 2013 qualification and the Olympics to prepare for this season.
It is the second time the league has been called off in the States and Smith will now wait to see what offers come her way.
Smith this morning took part in a coaching session at Queen’s School, Bushey, where the Under-13 girls team are preparing for the regional finals of the npower Football League Cup.
The team will next week take on representative teams from Cardiff, Aldershot and Gillingham in a bid to reach the national final at Wembley.
Speaking on where her future might be, Smith explained: “I don’t know if I am honest. I was planning to go back to Boston on March 10. But that is not happening now.
“I am going to sit down and see what opportunities come my way, in terms of clubs in England, maybe clubs in Europe, Sweden and Germany, and just see what the best deal is leading up to such a big year.
“We have got qualification for the Euros happening this year. We have got a big game against Holland in June. That will determine whether we go to the Euros in 2013, so I need to be playing regular football. Where that may be, I don’t know yet.”
She continued: “We did get the go-ahead in December that it would run, but yesterday we got an email saying it couldn’t actually go ahead so it is really disappointing, especially as it is the second time around for women’s soccer that a professional league has gone under.”
Smith said though that she does intend to find a new club to get herself fit and ready for the Olympics.
“You have got to be playing and you have got to be in form going into the tournament” she added.
“It is crucial to be playing on a regular basis and being healthy and that is what I intend to do.”
Kelly Smith was training with Queens School as part of the npower Football League Girls Cup, a national competition for under 13 girls culminating at Wembley Stadium on 25th March 2012.
