Despite West Herts Hockey Club men's side sitting top of the league it didn't stop Cambridge upsetting the odds with a 2-1 victory.
West Herts were the better side but went behind in the first period. However, the league leaders dominated the second half and were finally rewarded when Robin Willis slotted home.
But score wasn’t level for long as a penalty corner again led to another away goal which proved to be the difference as Cambridge held on for all three points.
The men’s fourth, fifth and sixth teams also managed to avoid the cold and experienced a mixed set of results.
The fourths dominating first half performance eased them to third in the table and within seven points of the leaders.
Also tasting victory were the fifths who came from 0-3 down to win 6-3, unfortunately the sixth team were unable to add a third victory as a disappointing performance ended in defeat.
The ladies first XI was one of few games not to be called off and they didn’t disappoint, sealing a hard fought 5-2 win over Lowesoft.
Anna McGlauhlin opened the scoring early on, but it was soon cancelled out as the away side drew level. Sally Bradley put West Herts ahead once more, but they were again pegged back before Becky Perry ensured a 3-2 half time lead.
The second half saw the home side boss possession and a penalty flick from Vicky Honour was quickly followed in by Perry’s second goal of the match, to give Herts a 5-3 win.
The ladies second XI were also in action but lost to Broxbourne in controversial circumstances.
After a host of complaints that the pitch was unplayable from the away side, they reluctantly took to the field but were soon a goal down, Taniya Montgomery with the opener.
Julie Waring also looked set to score but just as she wound up the hit, play was stopped as the away side continued to complain.
Despite their dominance West Herts were only able to convert one of the many chances they created, a statistic they would soon regret as a rejuvenated Broxbourne took the win.
