Former manager Graham Taylor has said he will not resign as Life Vice-President of Watford FC.

Taylor, who twice managed the Hornets from 1977 to 1987 and 1996 to 2001, revealed Sir Elton John informed him of his decision to quit as Life President of the club in a phone call from America.

But he said he would not follow the rock star out of Vicarage Road because he doesn’t “know all the facts”.

Taylor said: “I knew Elton was going to resign and he called me from America to explain. I understand where he's coming from and his reasons. At the present time, I’m not going to resign as Life Vice-President because I don’t know all the facts.

“Watford Football Club is very important to me, as are the fans of the club, and hopefully my relationship and record with them during my time there underlines that.

“If I were to resign now, I’m sure the fans would be thinking ‘what the hell is going on?’ And I wouldn’t want to add to that feeling by resigning when I don’t know the facts and when all I am getting is hearsay.

“I’m very interested that an EGM has been called for December, although I am looking from a distance. I understand it’s been called for the dismissal of the board. However, it seems apparent that in a vote of shares, the board's position will not be lost. Therefore, I will be just as interested at what else is said and anything else that might come out.

“I am surprised at the very inconvenient time of day that the EGM has been called for. It is not good for the real fans. I have to stress to supporters I only know what I have read and heard.

“The club will be with me until my dying day and my first ten years as manager at Watford were the best that any manager could ever have hoped for. I am sure supporters feel they need someone who they can trust to tell them the truth and like them, I just want to know the facts. What I don't want to do is resign now and end my association without knowing exactly what is going on.

“I’ve tried to keep my distance over the last few years as I didn’t think it was fair on anyone, least of all Aidy, to have me hanging around. However, I shall be watching things very closely and will await further developments and hopefully learn the real facts as soon as possible.”
