AMERICAN full back Chris Wyles is hoping he can build on his impressive full debut at the weekend and secure a permanent move to Saracens.
Wyles, who grew up in Harpenden, is on a season-long secondment from USA Rugby but if he continues to put in performances like last Sunday’s, Eddie Jones may consider making the move a permanent one.
The 25-year-old put in a man of the match performance in the 53-3 win against Mont de Marsan and capped the display off with a try.
The full back admitted he wanted to commit his future to Saracens but said he didn’t want to “look too far ahead”.
Wyles said: “I would definitely want to secure a permanent deal, that is an ambition of mine.
“Saracens is a good side and there are good surroundings at the club.
“When you are at a club, you want to do your best and I just want to concentrate on every game I play.
“I don’t want to look too far ahead, it is more important to look at the next game.”
Wyles was born in Connecticut, USA, and lived on the East Coast until he moved to Harpenden with his English parents when he was 11.
He went to Haileybury College in Hertford and Nottinghamshire University and played for Leicester Tigers Academy, Nottingham Rugby Club and Northampton Saints.
But he moved back to the USA shortly before the World Cup in 2007, where he shone and scored a try against South Africa, who were being coached by none other than Eddie Jones.
It is not the usual route players take to get into first class rugby but Wyles believes he has benefited from it.
He said: “For me personally, it has been the experience with the Eagles (USA’s national team) and playing on the big stage in games like at the World Cup that has improved my game.
“I think I am the kind of player who develops slightly slower than other players and at 20 I probably was not as good as some of them are now.”
But on Sunday he showed he has become a well-rounded full back and he impressed Jones with his display.
Saracens’ director of rugby said: “He is a good lad. We managed to get it arranged with America for him to play with us.
“He will go back for the test matches in November for the Eagles but he is a good solid player, strong through contract and fearless in the air.”
