It had to be him didn’t it? As soon as Andre Gray joined Plymouth earlier in the season, there was a feeling he might score against the Hornets when they visited Home Park.

A former Watford player with a largely undistinguished career at Vicarage Road who also has Luton Town on his CV and played alongside the current head coach Tom Cleverley.

The script almost wrote itself, and that he scored two bangers which included an equaliser deep into stoppage time just made the evening better for Sky Sports.

“He took his goals very well tonight because we limited Plymouth to very little,” admitted Cleverley afterwards.

“Ex-players scoring against you happens in football. An ex-player and an ex-teammate of mine, and sometimes that gives players an extra five or 10%.

“And if the fans are giving you a bit of chirp that maybe makes you grit your teeth and be a little bit more determined.

“But Andre has hit a once-in-a-career goal to equalise and it hurts.

“If it was someone else scoring those goals it would hurt me just as much though.

“Maybe for our supporters it hurts a bit more that he’s an ex-Watford and an ex-Luton player, but for me I’m just sore generally that we’ve not won the game.”

As the clock ticked down, Watford started to drop deeper than they had throughout the game.

“I think that naturally happens,” said the head coach.

“We’re trying to have that superior mindset but 2-1 up away from home and a lot of the players have been travelling.

“It naturally happens that you go into a ‘let’s defend our lead’ mode.

“It meant balls were in and around our box a bit more, but it’s still taken an absolutely wonder strike to get the equaliser.”

When the Hornets didn’t kill the game off by failing to take a number of good chances, there felt like an air of inevitably that would did happen was waiting around the corner.

“I never thought that myself to be honest,” Cleverley said.

“I felt we were sitting a bit deep but we were still in control.

“It’s taken a wonder strike to deny us and it’s important I don’t dissect too much.

“We brought on Sierralta, who was better equipped than James Morris to defend the box. If you see that out, then everything has been done efficiently.

“I’ll need to watch the game back and see if we could have seen it out any better, but on first viewing if you’re reducing a team to 25-yard shots then it could happen in the final minutes.”
