It was almost scripted – Andre Gray scored a stoppage-time equaliser to deny Watford victory and earn Plymouth a 2-2 draw.
The Hornets looked set for only their third away win of the season but Gray struck five minutes into stoppage time to mean the Hornets drew an away game for the first time this season.
Moussa Sissoko returned to the team after serving his three-match ban and Ryan Andrews returned to the starting XI in place of the suspended Festy Ebosele.
Having travelled straight from Chile to Heathrow and then onto Plymouth in a taxi, Francisco Sierralta started on the bench.
James Morris came into the side to play on the left side of the back three, while in-form Vakoun Bayo led the line with Giorgi Chakvetadze and Kwadwo Baah just behind him.
The first half was some of Watford’s best football away from home this season and, with the boost of Bayo’s early goal, they looked threatening whenever they crossed halfway.
Almost predictably Andre Gray scored a very well-taken equaliser but the Hornets rallied and regained the lead with a free-kick routine from the training ground.
The second half didn’t match the first but Watford still exerted a good degree of control and limited the home side to only a few half chances.
However, just when the points looked won, Gray popped up again with another finish unlike most of his Watford career t snatch a point.
Here’s how the game unfolded:
3 - Chakvetadze's driven free kick is hit over his own bar by Gyabi.
8 – Plymouth 0 Watford 1 (Bayo)
He's done it again! Ball was moved from right to left, Larouci curled a superb cross and Bayo basically slid the ball over the line between his knees.
10 - Could have been two as Morris crossed and the ball evaded both Larouci and Bayo as they rushed into the six-yard box.
21 - Bayo's flick sets Chakvetadze running down the left. He gets to the box, cuts inside and shoots over the bar.
23 – Plymouth 1 (Gray) Watford 1
Well, that was always likely. Deep cross from the right and Gray meets it with a very well controlled right-foot shot across Bachmann and inside the back post.
25 - Whittaker lets fly from 30 yards and the ball whistles wide with Bachmann diving.
29 - Obafemi turned on the edge of the box but dragged his shot wide.
30 - Louza's corner leads to some head tennis before Porteous gets the ball but rolls it wide from six yards.
41 – Plymouth 1 Watford 2 (Porteous)
That looked like one off the training ground. Louza clipped a free-kick beyond the back post to where Pollock had made a late run. He turned the ball across the face of goal and Porteous was there to poke it into the net.
Half-time – Plymouth 1 Watford 2
46 - Gyabi gathers the ball in the centre circle, drives forward and sends a rising shot from 30 yards over the bar.
57 - Chakvetadze takes the ball on the left, turns and releases a shot that Grimshaw has to tip over the bar.
64 - Gyabi cuts in from the left but his low shot is comfortably held by Bachmann.
77 - Sissoko breaks forward and goes past two before sliding the ball left to Bayo in the area. He takes a touch and shoots but Grimshaw deflects it over.
80 - Wright gets into the box, turns past Pollock but sees Bachmann tip his low shot round the post.
90+5 – Plymouth 2 (Gray) Watford 2
It had to be him. And so late as well. But anther good finish as the striker turns in the box and curls a shot beyond Bachmann.
Full-time – Plymouth 2 Watford 2
