Oxhey Jets extended their unbeaten run to nine games with a battling 3-1 victory over Windsor at the Boundary Stadium thanks to two late goals.
There was a degree of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’ about the performance following the club’s Remembrance fixture against the Royal Navy’s Under-23 side the previous Saturday, but the hosts prevailed thanks to a hard-working display.
The game started in a frenzy with chances at both ends and it was Lewis Lavin, on three occasions, who made suburb point-blank saves to keep the game goalless, before the returning Patrick Brander came within inches of opening the scoring for Jets.
The home side did make the breakthrough in the 21st minute when George Rice’s perfect through ball set up the club’s player of the month Dom Mosca to crack an unstoppable shot high into the net.
Rice had a big chance himself minutes later but shot inches over, then Joe Reade looked to have headed home from a corner but again his effort just cleared the target.
Jets thought they would be awarded a penalty when Mosca played in Rice who was taken down but, much to their amazement, the referee deemed the offence to have taken place outside the 18-yard box and the free-kick went over.
The bitty nature of the contest continued after the break, with Lavin again making two important saves, while each side had the ball in the net but both ruled out by an assistant’s flag.
With five minutes of normal time remaining though, Troy White headed Windsor level from a corner following a period of pressure.
It looked like the game would end in a draw until Toju James embarked on a superb run, jinking and forcing his way through before firing home from a very tight angle to make it 2-1 after 87 minutes.
That became 3-1 two minutes later when David Lopes slotted home to confirm a victory that leaves Jets 14th in the Combined Counties League Division One table.
