The referee who took charge of Watford’s controversial last-gasp defeat at Southampton last season is due to be in the middle when the Hornets bid to make it back-to-back away victories when they travel to south Wales tomorrow night.
The EFL website has stated that Josh Smith has been appointed to take charge of the Hornets’ trip to Swansea City when Tom Cleverley’s men will be looking to build on Saturday’s superb 6-2 triumph at Sheffield Wednesday.
The University of Bedfordshire graduate was in charge when Watford came from 2-0 down to equalise with five minutes of normal time remaining at St Mary’s in April.
After the fourth official had signalled seven minutes of injury time, Smith played on for a further two during which time Flynn Downes scored a winner following a handball which the referee and his team of officials all missed which ended Cleverley’s unbeaten run as then interim head coach.
Smith has been one of the busier referees this season, taking charge of a total of 13 league and cup games so far – including two in the Premier League – and issuing a total of 54 yellow cards and one red.
Matthew Russell and Mark Russell are due to be the assistant referees for the 8pm kick-off, with Dean Whitestone the fourth official at the Swansea.com Stadium.
