From the moment they took the lead after 11 minutes until the last celebrating player had left the Kenilworth Road pitch, the Luton fans justifiably taunted the travelling Watford fans behind the goal.

From chants about buses to being beaten on their big day out, the Hornets faithful endured a torrid couple of hours on and off the pitch.

So, when the game was over, they did their best to convey exactly how they felt as the Watford players headed towards the tunnel.

Head coach Tom Cleverley made a point of going towards them.

“You’ve got to sick your chest out and take whatever comes your way,” he said.

“We all have to do that.

“There were no surprises in the reaction, and if anything I’m glad that happened as it’s a consequence of what happened today, and there has to be consequences for that performance.

“Supporters have got every right to be disappointed.”

What about if he been sitting across a table from just one of those many dejected Watford fans?

“I’ve apologised but I accept that words aren’t going to help anyone at the minute,” he said.

“There has to be a reaction, and my job is to focus on the next game because there has to be an improvement on today in the next game.

“We have to hurt from this one as well, of course, because it means a lot to a lot of people.

“There would be a sincere apology for what they’ve just witnessed.

“You can win or lose any away football match, but the performances have to be more resilient and we have to be harder to beat.”

There is a chance for the Hornets to redeem themselves in midweek.

“The resilience and being harder to beat has to start on Tuesday,” stressed Cleverley.

“Leeds will be a big test, and I hope a big test gets the best out of us.”
