Tom Cleverley has told his four wing-backs they can expect to regularly be switched, but not to see it as a reflection of their performances.

The Hornets have three full internationals and an England Under-20 player to pick from, and on Saturday against Coventry all four were used with a double swap during the second half.

“It’s the most demanding part of our team physically,” said Cleverley.

“I spoke with all four of them and let them know that they are three full internationals and an Under-20 international, and that is the riches I have in those positions.

“Don’t take it personally if you are getting changed at 60 minutes, it’s nothing to do with performance.

“It’s a position where we can really freshen up, and it’s a demanding role to play.

“It suits our squad to have four such strong options and I thought there was a positive impact from all the subs again.”

At the back, Mattie Pollock had another impressive game and showed he’s far more than just someone who can win headers.

Once again he progressed the ball, and displayed a good range of passing.

“He’s been top for us this season,” said Cleverley.

“It’s the one thing that I’ve seen from leaving Mattie as a teammate to regaining him as a coach is how much he’s developed.

“We are continuing that development and he is gaining confidence on the ball.”

Pollock had an 86% success rate with passes on Saturday, and 64% with longer balls.

“He’s creating chances,” said the Watford head coach.

“He assisted Bayo’s goal here against Derby, he assisted Bayo’s chance at Sheffield United and one for Jebbison here today.

“He is in a really good moment and it gives us another dimension when Pollock, Porteous and Morris can step forward from outside centre back and create when teams are sitting off us.
