So far in just five fixtures Watford have given game time to 23 different players, and none of them have looked out of place.

Each player has contributed something positive and again against Plymouth, those who came into the team or appeared from the bench staked a claim to continue being involved.

“In training and with their performance, these guys who came in are telling me they should be playing,” reflected Tom Cleverley.

“It’s a credit to the healthy environment we have at the minute that everyone wants to be a part of it.

“I think our subs have positively impacted every single game we’ve played so far.

“That is a credit to the work ethic and attitude the players are showing on a daily basis.”

Just as when MK Dons were put to the sword in the first round tie, despite making personnel changes against Plymouth, the way Watford played did not give any hint that those coming in didn’t know what was expected of them.

With more than two entire teams fielded across five fixtures, the transitions have been seamless.

“I was really pleased with that again, and I’ve just said that in the dressing room,” Cleverley said.

“The fact that people aren’t sulking is great - instead they want to come in and impress because they want to be a part of what we’ve got.

“Even when a substitute comes on they all want to make a positive impact.”

Not only was Tuesday night’s team a winning one, it was also a young one.

“I didn’t look at the average age of the team but I felt like it was a really young side, especially in the second half when substitutes were introduced, but I felt they maturely managed the game,” the Watford head coach said.

“It’s important we stay humble though, because Sunday will be a big test, and I have challenged the players because we will have to produce a big performance.

“It’ll probably need to be our best performance of the season on Sunday to ensure we go into the international break with six from six.”
