Watford are sitting joint top of the Championship tonight after continuing their perfect start to the season with as 2-1 victory over Derby County at Vicarage Road.

The Hornets didn’t make it easy for themselves by conceding inside the opening two minutes to an Ebou Adams goal, but Vakoun Bayo’s superb equaliser ensured they were level at the break.

Tom Cleverley’s men played some good football throughout but this was also a display of determination and character that was to be rewarded by a second goal from Moussa Sissoko that secured a fourth consecutive victory – and a third straight home win – in all competitions.

Here are five talking points we’ve selected from this afternoon’s game. Tell us what you think by using the comments facility on this page.

Coming from behind to win

Watford made it four wins from four by coming from behind to win for the first time under Tom Cleverley.

It was also the first time the Hornets had taken three points after trailing since their 2-1 win at Blackburn Rovers just before Christmas and the first at Vicarage Road since beating Norwich City 3-2 the previous month.

Falling behind inside two minutes would not have been in Watford’s script but it did mean they had plenty of time to try and right that early wrong.

Like against Stoke last weekend, the hosts grew into the game as it soon became clear they may have to be patient as the Rams got bodies behind the ball when defending.

It took a moment of quality to get them level – a description that applies to both Mattie Pollock’s delivery and Bayo’s finish – and some good individual play form Kwadwo Baah ultimately led to the winner.

What are your views of Watford’s performance today?

Vakoun Bayo

The forward will always divide opinion because he doesn’t score as many goals as some fans would expect of a striker but he has shown the ability to pull something special out of the hat before – and he did it again, superbly executing a scissor kick to score a memorable equaliser.

The 27-year-old worked tirelessly for the team, almost creating a second for himself at the end of the first half when he pressed the visitors into a mistake, before he sent an opportunist header narrowly over in the second period.

Bayo was given a standing ovation by Vicarage Road when he made way for Mileta Rajovic with five minutes of normal time remaining.

What did you make of Bayo’s display?

Mattie Pollock

There was no need for the protective headband today but it made no difference to the central defender’s performance as his excellent start to the season continued.

Named man-of-the-match after the victory, Pollock was again an impressive figure in defence, winning the majority of his aerial battles and also getting in blocks and recovery challenges when necessary.

But there is much more to his game than being strong defensively. He had the confidence to try an early shot from distance and his contribution for Bayo’s equaliser was superb – a measured, clipped delivery akin to a ideally judged wedge shot in golf.

What has impressed you most about Pollock’s start to the season?

Impact off the bench

When a manager makes changes, it is with the hope – expectation even – that the players being introduced will have a positive impact – and Kwado Baah certainly did that.

The 21-year-old had barely been on the pitch for a minute when he received the ball inside the right angle of the penalty area, burst down the side of the defence and was able to keep the ball in play to pull it back – a delivery that ultimately created the winner.

Ken Sema, Ryan Porteous and Rajovic also came on after the break as Cleverley changed the majority of the left side of his team and they also made positive contributions to the victory.

How did you rate the impact of Cleverley's substitutions?

Yasser Larouci

Even with Jeremy Ngakia sidelined through injury, the wing-back may well have been handed his full debut given his fine performance as a second-half substitute in the victory over Stoke City.

His afternoon didn’t start well as he was exposed defensively in the build-up to Derby’s opener but was generally sound at the back thereafter.

One good piece of inter-play with Giorgi Chakvetadze saw the Troyes loanee get behind the Rams rearguard in the first-half when space was often in short supply against the visitors’ packed defence. Replaced by Ken Sema in the 57th minute.

How do you feel Larouci did on his first Hornets start?
