Watford will play four consecutive home games for the first time in 17 years as a result of being drawn at home to Plymouth in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

The 5-0 win over MK Dons on Tuesday is followed by Championship games at Vicarage Road against Stoke City on Saturday and then Derby County on Saturday August 24, before Wayne Rooney brings his Argyle side in the week commencing Monday August 26.

Four home competitive games in a row has happened 23 times in Watford’s history, and it occurred twice in the same season during the 2006/07 campaign.

The first batch of four was between October and November 2006, the sequence starting when the Hornets beat Hull City 2-1 in the League Cup with goals from Ashley Young and Tamas Priskin on Tuesday October 24.

Four days later there was a 0-0 Premier League draw with Tottenham at Vicarage Road and then, on Saturday November 4, Young scored again and a Jonathan Woodgate own goal saw Middlesbrough beaten 2-0.

On Tuesday November 7, the Hornets drew 2-2 in the League Cup with Newcastle. Antoine Sibierski put the visitors ahead early on before Damien Francis equalised in the 69th minute.

The tie went to extra time, and Danny Shittu put Watford 2-1 up in the 108th minute only for the current Burnley manager Scott Parker to level it up four minutes from time.

Newcastle then went on to knock the Hornets out 5-4 on penalties.

Then there were four more home games on the trot in February and March.

On Saturday February 17, Francis scored the only goal two minutes from time to beat Ipswich Town 1-0 in the FA Cup fifth round.

The next Wednesday, the Hornets drew 1-1 with Wigan at Vicarage Road in the Premier League. Fitz Hall was sent off for the visitors after 20 minutes, Darius Henderson put Watford in front four minutes later but the 10-man Latics earned a point with a Caleb Folan goal five minutes before half-time.

The following Saturday, Everton were the visitors to Vicarage Road and they went home with a 3-0 victory.

The fourth home game in the run was on Saturday March 3, and saw Watford race into a 2-0 lead through goals from Hameur Bouazza and Francis again in the opening 20 minutes.

However, Charlton Athletic came back in the second half and pulled one back through Luke Young before Darren Ambrose snatched a point in the 89th minute.

It was a fixture which saw the fourth and final Watford appearance of French midfielder Johan Cavalli, who had joined on a free transfer from Istres and left later that year to join Belgian side RAEC Mons.

It was also a match which saw the former Scottish international midfielder Gareth Williams make the second of only three appearances for the Hornets.

The former Nottingham Forest player had cost £600,000 when he signed from Leicester City in the January transfer window, but started just two matches and came off the bench once.

Then 26, Williams sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury which eventually led to him being released by the Hornets in 2009 and he retired from the game a year later.

In 2016, Williams came out of retirement to play three games for Europa Point in the Gibraltar National League.
