Tom Cleverley admitted he needs to allow himself to enjoy wins more, but also said he didn’t want his players to take the feeling of the 5-0 Carabao Cup win over MK Dons for granted.

The Watford head coach and his side followed up their league victory at Millwall on Saturday with a dominant and impressive success over the League Two side in a game where the final score reflected the difference between the two teams on the night.

Cleverley praised the performance, but stressed he wants his players to focus on continuing the current good form at the weekend

“You ask for a real professional performance and want the basics done right first and foremost,” he said.

“You have to earn the right to play and I thought we did that really well, barring a spell at the start of the second half after they came back out well.

“We need to deal with those moments a little bit better, but then I thought the substitutes gave us that little bit of oomph and extra energy that we needed to see the game out in a really impressive way.

“I’m the type of guy who always tries to look forward, and I stop myself from enjoying wins a bit too much and I should enjoy them more.

“I don’t want the lads to take this feeling for granted though. You have to work for this winning feeling and that is really important because it’s been a long time since this team won three in a row.”

Watford’s record against teams from lower divisions in the early stages of the cup has been poor, and the head coach was aware of that.

“Being a player here I know how tricky these cup ties can be,” he admitted.

“Two years ago we got beat by MK Dons, last year it was Stevenage.

“It’s a long process from only winning six home league games last season to making Vicarage Road a fortress but we have a clear strategy of how we’re going to do that and this was a good start.”
