Highlights were in short supply during Dave Bassett’s ill-fated spell in charge of Watford but the first half of the 1987/88 season did feature one outcome that has not happened since – the Hornets scoring eight goals in a competitive game.

Watford were already in command of their League Cup second round tie against bottom-of-the-league Darlington after winning the first leg away 3-0 thanks to goals from Nigel Gibbs, Gary Porter and Trevor Senior.

Gibbs only scored a total of seven and league cup goals during his distinguished career at Vicarage Road but he was to repeat the trick in the second leg as the Hornets blew their opponents away in front of an attendance of 8,186 fans at Vicarage Road to run out 11-0 aggregate winners.

Bassett’s side shared the goals around on Tuesday, October 6, Peter Hetherston leading the way with a brace on his first start for the club, while Luther Blissett, Glyn Hodges, Iwan Roberts, Steve Terry and substitute Tony Agana also got in on the act.

Watford went on to beat Swindon Town 4-2 in a third round replay at Vicarage Road – the initial tie ended in a 1-1 draw – but saw their League Cup hopes ended that season by a 3-1 defeat at Manchester City.
