Mileta Rajovic spoke like an instinctive goalscorer when he admitted after netting the winner at Millwall that he wasn’t even sure how the ball had got to him.

The Dane reacted superbly when Tom Dele-Bashiru’s shot was deflected up in the air, and got there first to head in at the back post.

“I don’t even know actually exactly what happened,” he smiled.

“I don’t know who hit the shot but it deflected off somebody and I saw the ball and I just knew I had to get to it quick.

“I know when the ball gets into the box that’s when my job starts, and so to get to the ball and get the goal that made it 3-2 was amazing.

“To then go and celebrate with the fans was even better.

“To score a winner and then celebrate with your fans is what any player wants, but especially me as a striker.

“It was nice to give the fans the win, it was very special in that moment.

“We were 2-0 in front and felt like we had the whole game under control and then all of a sudden it was 2-2.

“So to get the goal that made it 3-2 was amazing.”

Rajovic reflected what most at the game felt – Watford felt they had the game under control when they led 2-0 with 15 minutes left.

“On the first day of the season everybody is always a little bit nervous but we were 2-0 ahead and it felt like we had the game under control,” the striker said.

“Then it got to 2-2 and it was a little more stressful.

“But we worked hard today, and that is what we have done all summer.

“We have worked hard in training and obviously some results in pre-season didn’t go our way, but this is what it’s all about in these games when the Championship starts.

“If we keep working and keep building in training then we will get much more.”

And while he enjoyed notching the winner, Rajovic admitted he’s just as happy if Watford take three points and he doesn’t score.

“Obviously I like to score goals and that is what I’m here to do,” he said.

“But three points is more important to me so if I score a little less but we take much more points than last season, then I’ll take that.”
