A spirited and determined display saw Oxhey Jets dig in to beat Windsor & Eton 1-0 and secure their first victory of the new Combined Counties League Division One season last night.

Following Saturday’s disappointing performance in the 4-1 defeat to Staines & Lamas in their opening game of the new campaign, the Jets management team of Dave Barnes and Tom Inch made changes and they worked a treat against a side tipped to be among the frontrunners in the league this season.

Although nine of the Jets squad are still on the beach, the home side went toe-to-toe with their opponents in the opening stages as both sides looked to attack.

Elliot Harris twice went through one-on-one with the Windsor keeper but was denied the first time and saw his second chance brush the wrong side of the post.

George Rice, following a long pre-season holiday, was recalled and rewarded the staff by slotting home what proved to be the winner at the back post after a period of Oxhey pressure in the 32nd minute.

Jets almost extended the lead before the break when Liam Osborne's fine header clattered the crossbar as the hosts remained in front of the interval.

Windsor had more of the game in the second half and struck the post in what proved to be a real ding-dong of a match.

The hosts did receive four yellow cards, which they felt was harsh, and enough added time was played to worry about the planning permission for the lights.

Jets used all five substitutes as players became tired and leggy but they held out for the win to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat in fine fashion.
