A youthful and new-look Oxhey Jets side had no answer to Staines & Lammas as they fell to a 4-1 home defeat in their opening match of the Combined Counties League Division One season on Saturday.

Fielding eight debutants including five players making their first appearance at senior level, the hosts were out-run and out-thought throughout against the league newcomers who had come up from the Sussex County League as they look to climb back to their past heights as Staines Town.

The visitors got their noses in front early on when a flowing move was finished off by Daniel Bimba.

Jets responded positively as George Davey, Blake Argent and Andre Lopes had opportunities, with Argent the closest to equalising when he beat the keeper but was denied by a goalline clearance.

Fortune then did not favour the South Oxhey side when debutant keeper Rex Cannon turned a penalty onto the post but it rolled along the line for spot-kick taker Josh Hooks to tap in.

The hosts needed a strong start to the second half but the game was effectively ended as a contest just three minutes after the restart when Hooks scored his second.

Staines netted their fourth in the 57th minute but Jets used all their five substitutes and one of them, 16-year-old Dylan Roberts, netted his first goal in senior football to open his side’s scoring account for the season.

Jets will be hoping for better when they face Windsor & Eton at home tomorrow (Tuesday), kick-off 7.30pm.
