While Watford are not alone in being yet to make a summer signing, some of their Championship rivals have been busy.

As far it is possible to check, it seems that 15 of the clubs, including the Hornets, in the Championship for the 2024/25 season have yet to bring in a new player.

At the other end of the scale, QPR have been the most active so far with four players brought in on free transfers.

However, three of that quartet - Jack McDowell (Aston Villa), Kieran Morgan (Tottenham), Rohan Vaughan (Burnley)  – are all 18-year-olds with no senior experience.

The fourth is another 18-year-old, winger Daniel Bennie who made 25 appearances for Australian side Perth Glory last season.

Relegated Burnley have snapped up 22-year-old former Montpellier defender Maxime Esteve after a spell on loan at Turf Moor last season.

The French Under-21 international cost the Clarets a reported €12m, and they paid some €18m to permanently sign Belgian international winger Mike Tresor from Genk after he too played on loan for them in the Premier League last season.

Newly-promoted Derby dipped back down into League One to sign winger Corey Blackett-Taylor on a free from Charlton, where he made 40 appearances and scored nine goals last season.

Defender Luke Ayling has signed for Middlesbrough after spending the second half of the last campaign on loan at the Riverside from Leeds United.

Michael Carrick's side have also brought in Dutch winger Delano Burgzorg from FC Mainz - the 25-year-old was on loan at Huddersfield last season.

Norwich City have paid a reported €3.6m to sign Panamian international central defender Jose Cordoba from Levski Sofia.

The well-travelled 23-year-old has previously been with Celta Vigo in Spain and Etar Veliko in Bulgaria before joining Levski.

Swedish goalkeeper Viktor Johansson couldn’t stop Rotherham from being relegated, but he’s stayed in the Championship by joining Stoke City for a fee believed to be £1m.

The 25-year-old, capped once by his country, played 46 times for the Millers last season and previously had spells at Aston Villa and Leicester City.

The Potters have also picked up experienced defender Ben Gibson on a free from Norwich.

Thirty-year-old former Falkirk and Rotherham midfielder Will Vaulks has left Sheffield Wednesday to join promoted Oxford United, who have also signed West Ham Under-21 goalkeeper Jacob Knightbridge.

Coventry City paid a fee believed to be around £400,000 for Australian Under-23 international winger Raphael Borges Rodrigues from A-League side Macarthur, and have splashed out just over £4m on midfielder Marko Stamenic from Red Star.

Plymouth have brought in England Under-20 international full-back Nathanael Ogbeta from Swansea City, Blackburn have paid £100,000 for young Lindfield winger Aodhan Doherty and Portsmouth have signed defender Jordan Williams from Barnsley on a free.

Ben Hamer, who was released by Watford, is joining Sheffield Wednesday, and the Owls have also signed full-back Max Lowe from their neighbours at Bramall Lane.

The transfer window in England opened last week, and will close at 11pm on Friday August 30.
