Finding out the dates for the two derby clashes against Luton Town are likely to be at the top of many Watford fans priorities when the new Championship fixtures are published later this month, but there will not be a repeat of a scenario that once arose in the past.
The two clubs were in Division Three in the 1964/65 season when the fixtures determined they should meet in a festive double-header, resulting in Ken Furphy’s side completing a quick-fire home-and-away league double over their near neighbours.
The two sides first met at Kenilworth Road on Boxing Day when a George Harris hat-trick and a Jimmy McAnearney goal fired the visitors to a 4-2 victory.
Two days later on December 28, came the return at Vicarage Road and Watford again prevailed 2-0 thanks to goals from Ron Saunders and Duncan Welbourne.
A Watford Observer photographer was in attendance and captured these 60-year-old images on a gloomy winter’s day at a time when goalkeepers didn’t wear gloves.
