Cassiobury Rangers twice defeated St Joseph’s 3-2 in a double-header, the final matches to played in in the Watford Sunday League season, to leave them in the runners-place.
However, they could still miss out depending on the outcome of the Hertfordshire FA investigation into the abandoned game between St Joseph’s and WD Bushey.
Liam Smyth gave Joes the lead in the first game when he nipped in ahead of the keeper for an easy tap in after a long ball over the top.
Rangers soon levelled when Alexi Andreas broke through on goal to square for Corey Botten to tap into an empty net.
Cassiobury went ahead after the break when Harry Bradford lobbed home from around 25 yards out on the angle.
A third followed when a cross from Sam Mortimer was headed in by Jon Buch.
Joes made it interesting at the end when a defensive mistake again saw Smyth net with a tap in.
The second game again also ended in the same scoreline, this time with Rangers making the breakthrough when a through ball from Nathan Page allowed Andreas to slot home.
The same player then got his second when Botten set him up for a composed finish, but Joes were able to get one back when Smyth got the last touch after a goalline scramble and the referee adjudged the ball to have crossed the line.
Ten minutes into the second half, Joes equalised when Liam Davis finished well past the keeper.
The game looked to heading towards a draw but with just two minutes remaining Rangers grabbed the winner when Mortimer found a small gap between defenders and over the keeper to smash home into the roof of the net.
