To ensure what was a very important post-match press conference is reported in detail and accurately, we are publishing what Valerien Ismael said after yesterday’s 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield verbatim and in smaller stories.
This is the third part of what he said to the media after the game.
In terms of the players, you’ve reflected on their performances. But do you think there were things you got wrong today, in hindsight?
VI: “What do you mean?”
In team selection, tactics or approach – was there anything that you would pin on yourself for today’s performance?
VI: “As I said, it was from all the players.
“One player kicked the ball out who is normally able to keep the ball, one gave straight away the pass to the opponent.
“As I say, I am uncomfortable with the result as a manger, but the responsibility is on the players for their own performance.
“I prepare myself for the game and how I perform.
“You can always run, you can always win your duels, this is the basics of football. Do the basics right first, get that confidence back first, and then afterwards we build on it.
“But if you’re not able to put that performance first then it will be difficult to win a game.
“It is nothing to do with tactics.”
We had two right-backs on the bench, we started with Tom Dele-Bashiru. That’s Ryan Andrews' fifth game on the bench. I know we’ve talked about this before, but is this purely resting him or is there something more to it?
VI: “There is nothing more. It is a tactical decision.
“We know what we have got with Dele-Bashiru, and I will explain again.
“He gives us that composure in the build-up, especially when you need to have the build-up at home with a lot of possession. We need that composure.
“It’s a decision to let him play there, and he played well in this position.
“This is just a tactical decision.”
