The win against Rotherham yesterday wasn’t pretty, and Valerien Ismael admitted he wasn’t expecting the game to be a feast for the purist.

Watford went into the match on the back of four consecutive defeats and without a win in seven, while the Millers had won just a single game in their last 20 outings.

“Our focus was all about the result,” said the head coach.

“We said that we have to do the job to win games. When you start to not win one game, two games, three games, then it becomes difficult for your mindset.

“But at some point you have to make it happen and not just speak about it.

“We couldn’t make excuses anymore, we had to act on the pitch and we did that.”

With Rotherham known for their direct approach, Ismael prepared his side for exactly what was served up at the New York Stadium

“I think we were ready for the battle and it is what we spoke about before the game,” he said.

“Today was all about the result. The last few days we just focussed on our performance, to do the basics right, to get the fighting spirit we would need.

“We knew the pitch would be an additional challenge for us and I think we dealt with it very well.

“And finally another clean sheet: we stopped the bleeding.

“I think today was a good reward after a tough period.

“The schedule and the results lately have been very difficult, but we managed today very well to turn things around.”

Francisco Sierralta returned to the team, Mattie Pollock replaced the suspended Ryan Porteous and Wes Hoedt continued his ever-present run, meaning the Hornets had more height and physicality in their team.

“Today we were more strong in our line-up because we expected that kind of game,” Ismael admitted.

“Especially when you are in front then you know there will be a massive wave after wave.

“There was great bravery from everyone to support Ben and protect our goal.

“I don’t think they had a big, big chance because we defended well.

“It was a very solid performance in a difficult situation and we were able to have that final push.

“I said afterwards to the players it is now all about recovery and to make sure they get their minds free now because we have a week to prepare for the next game.”
