Watford forward Ashley Fletcher believes his future lies away from Vicarage Road and wants to play as many games as possible after joining Sheffield Wednesday on loan for the season.

The 27-year-old signed a five-year contract when he joined the Hornets in the summer of 2021, but has made just six appearances since, scoring twice.

He has now linked up with former Hornets boss Xisco Munoz at Hillsborough and was hoping to feature in their friendly against Luton Town on Saturday.

Speaking ahead of the game, Fletcher admitted he hadn’t been at London Colney during pre-season, explaining: “I haven't been there at all to be honest. I've just been doing individual work with a team that I've got up in the North-West. So in terms of match action I haven't had any as yet hence why I wasn't involved against Doncaster.

“But I'm hopeful that I can get 10 or 20 minutes on Saturday, if the manager decides so. Obviously the Southampton game is on the horizon not long after too so I'm hopeful I can be involved.

"As it stands I've got one year left there (at Watford). Obviously I've come out on loan this season to get games and like I say I see my future elsewhere but at the same time I am still contracted to them and anything can happen in football."

The former Manchester United, West Ham United and Middlesbrough striker has had two previous loan spells since moving to Watford, joining New York Red Bulls in the second half of the 2021/22 campaign prior to making 26 league appearances for Wigan Athletic last season.
