Experienced former England midfielder Jake Livermore has joined Watford on a one-year deal.

The 33-year-old was a free agent after his contract at West Brom ended last month.

Livermore's signing comes following reports earlier that Watford had been placed under an international transfer ban by world governing body FIFA.

The Watford Observer understands the signing was lodged before the embargo was put in place but the Hornets remain confident the issue will be resolved satisfactorily very shortly.

Livermore had been considered as a potential signing by former head coach Slaven Bilic towards the end of the January transfer window, but the move didn’t materialise.

Having begun his career with Arsenal’s Academy, Livermore moved across North London to join Spurs when he was 17.

Loan spells with the likes of MK Dons, Derby, Peterborough and Ipswich helped him gain experience and he featured 58 times for Tottenham, mainly between 2011 and 2013.

At the start of the 2013/14 season, Livermore joined Hull City – who were then in the Premier League – on a season-long loan.

He made 41 appearances, scoring five goals, and helped Hull not only stay up but also reach the FA Cup Final, where they lost 3-2 to Arsenal.

In summer 2014 he made a permanent move to Hull, and clocked up more than 100 appearances as the Tigers were relegated and then promoted straight back to the top flight.

During the January transfer window in 2017, he completed a £10m switch to fellow Premier League side West Brom.

Shortly after, he was recalled to the England squad by Gareth Southgate. Livermore had one cap at that point, earned in a 2-1 friendly win over Italy in 2012.

He went on to earn a further six England caps while amassing more than 200 appearances for the Baggies in his seven seasons at The Hawthorns.

Last term he made 21 appearances, 17 of them in the Championship.

Livermore played half a game as a trialist when Watford drew 1-1 with Arsenal in a behind-closed-doors friendly recently.
