Members of Watford Swimming Club produced some fine pool performances to return from the East Region Long Course Championships with a host of medals and personal best times.

A total of 27 swimmers from the club competed against strong competition in the championships, which were split over three weekends and staged at the 50-metre pools in Luton and Norwich, and they improved on last year’s performance in the event by winning nine medals.

Leading the charge was Matt Aldred who bagged a hat-trick of medals, claiming a golden double in the 50m butterfly and 100m butterfly, and adding a bronze in the 200m butterfly.

Karson Chan collected two medals, taking an impressive gold in the 50m breaststroke and bronze in the 100m breaststroke.

Cailin Hehir won silver in the 1500m freestyle, while bronze medals went to Ben Taggart in the 50m breaststroke and Constantine Calliafas in the 800m freestyle.

A club spokesperson said: “All of our 27 swimmers did tremendously well to qualify for the East Regional Championships.

“The competition was extremely tough this year so the club is delighted to return home with nine medals and a high number of personal best times.”
