When Keinan Davis scored four goals in seven games during September and October, it would have seemed unlikely to predict he then wouldn’t hit the net again until March.

The 25-year-old striker helped Watford take 10 points from those four games, and his last goal before his strike against Birmingham City was famously the third-minute opener in the 4-0 drubbing of Luton.

But after that Davis featured in 16 matches without netting, playing 1,320 minutes of football (or exactly 22 hours) without getting on the scoresheet.

That all changed on Tuesday night, and in some style too: his fierce angled shot in the 16th minute flashed into the roof of the net past Blues keeper John Ruddy – who must be properly fed up of being beaten by excellent strikes from Watford players (remember Wembley, April 2019?!).

Davis has also had a season interrupted by injuries, but he was the first to admit the goal was long overdue.

“It was about time,” he smiled after the game.

“I was trying to get the ball on my left foot, just waiting for the right time. Then it was a case of hit the target, and that’s what I managed to do.

“It was sweet to score against Birmingham for obvious reasons, and good to get it in front of their fans.”

It helped give Watford only their second win in 10 games, and went some way to erasing the memories of a dismal defeat at QPR on Saturday.

“We got the victory, and that’s what we set out to do,” said Davis.

“We didn’t play our best, but we got the result and that’s all that matters really.

“We knew the performance on Saturday was nowhere near good enough, especially for the fans that came and supported us. We knew we had to give them three points today.”

With a blank weekend on the horizon because of international fixtures, Watford have to build on the Birmingham game when they return to Vicarage Road at the weekend.

“It’s a win that will give us proper momentum going into Saturday,” Davis said.

“At home we feel comfortable with the fans behind us, and we know it’s important we carry on what we did into the Wigan game and head into the international break with two wins.”
