First start, first goal – and what a goal too for defender Joao Ferreira.
The Portuguese 21-year-old only recently moved to Vicarage Road from Benfica, but made his first appearance last week as a substitute against Blackpool.
Against Rotherham he started at right back and marked the occasion with the strike that earned Watford a 1-1 draw.
So, what about that goal?!
“I got the ball and started to drive and when I looked up I was alone and I thought, ‘I’ll try my luck’ and it happened,” said Ferreira.
- Paying the price for lack of quality
- 'If he goes we have to bring someone in'
- If given chances, Araujo should bring goals
“I didn’t know it was definitely going in, but I knew it was a good shot and I hoped!
“It was a good game, I’m happy to have scored the goal.
“It gave us a point but the work came from the whole team. We’re happy for a point but wanted more.”
Playing alongside fellow Portuguese-speaker Matheus Martins on the right flank, Ferreira enjoyed linking up with the Brazilian and is happy with the way his Watford career has started.
“I’m getting used to it! In Portugal it’s not like this but I’m enjoying it, and that’s the most important thing.
“It’s easier for us, we can speak in Portuguese and are getting used to playing with each other. It’s nice having someone who speaks my language down the line.”
Ferreira felt the Hornets deserved to win the game.
“I think the team played well, and we deserved a win. Sometimes you try and try but can’t get it: today it wasn’t three points but we go for the three points next week.
“We always have to improve, it’s not like when you win everything is perfect. We have to look at what we didn’t do and improve it.”
