As someone who uses his voice to excellent effect on the pitch, Watford keeper Daniel Bachmann clearly understands the importance of leadership.
It was a quality that was well to the fore as the Hornets claimed their 1-0 win at Norwich on Monday, and Bachmann said that willingness to lead in every area of the pitch was instrumental in the against-all-odds victory.
“I said before the match that we don’t just need three or four leaders, we need 11 of them,” said Bachmann.

“Even the ones who don’t speak English very well or who are young. You need to show that you’re a leader on and off the ball, even if it’s not talking.”
The keeper singled out Watford’s unlikely central midfield duo of Leandro Bacuna and Mario Gaspar for particular praise.
“Bacuna hadn’t had a club for a few months, and he has started the first few matches here consecutively. He has played a lot of minutes and he is getting fitter, and today was by far his best game.
“Mario especially played well. It’s almost like a Dan Gosling situation, just the other way. You can see the experience he has got and the fight, the running and the tackling.
“His English isn’t great, but he is trying. Every day in the dressing room he is trying to speak English to people, and he is trying to improve.
“That is exactly the kind of character we need. People who want to be here and want to fight for the team, and that’s exactly what we did today.
“I think we showed that fighting spirit which we had been lacking in the last two matches.”
The sheer number of players on the treatment table has been the subject of much talk and media coverage, and Bachmann said there comes a point where you just have to put it to one side.
“We know how difficult the situation is with the injuries we have,” he said.
“There are two ways you can deal with it - put your head in the sand and think everything is going against us, or you do what we did today. Everyone stuck together, fought on the pitch and that was the result.
“We knew the last two performances weren’t acceptable, and that’s a nice way to say it. We knew we had to sort ourselves out. We have a good dressing room, with a good mix of characters and leaders.”
Like his head coach and numerous teammates, Bachmann also commented on the Watford travelling support at Carrow Road.
“We were talking in the warm-up with the goalkeeper coaches, and the support we have is incredible,” he added.
“The away stand was full, and that’s incredible in any situation. We have been way below par in the last few weeks, but for them to stick with us has boosted us going forward. We are honestly incredibly grateful for that.
“We know we can rely on them, and we need to make sure that they can always rely on us to at least give 100 per cent every game and fight for the badge.”
