Watford v Luton clash will have 'significant police presence'

The rivals are set to face each other at Vicarage Road on Sunday with officers saying there will be a “significant policing presence” to maintain public safety.

Some games between the two have seen ugly scenes, notably a League Cup tie in September 2002 which saw fans invade the pitch.

Chief Superintendent Nick Caveney said police have been working with both clubs ahead of the 12pm kick off, adding: “We have a clear message for those coming to Sunday’s game.

“If, as the majority will be, you are attending to enjoy the game and the experience of a competitive derby match then you are welcome with open arms and we hope you have a great time.

“However, the rivalry is not an excuse for disorder or antisocial behaviour and this will not be tolerated, therefore we will be on hand to prevent trouble.”

He continued: “At the end of the game measures will be in place to ensure both sets of fans are able to leave the stadium in a more structured manner.

“We want everyone who comes to enjoy the game in a safe environment.”

Watford last faced Luton at home in September 2020 – winning the game 1-0 behind closed doors due to the pandemic. The last home game with fans was 2006.
