Martin Lukeman will aim to continue riding a wave this evening when he steps out on the oche in Leicester for the first televised quarter-final of his career.

The Watford thrower is preparing to face Nathan Aspinall in the last eight of the BoyleSports World Grand Prix after coming through another nerve-shredding match in the second round in front of the Sky Sports cameras last night.

Having beaten James Wade on a sudden-death leg in the first round on Tuesday at the Morningside Arena, ‘Smash’ triumphed by the same route again to knock out Ross Smith, keeping his composure after a remarkable moment in what proved to be the penultimate leg.

With the match tied at 2-2 but leading two legs to one, Lukeman had three darts at 45 to win the match. However, he bizarrely miscounted, throwing a single three before going for double 16.

Smith took the leg to force sudden death, but it was his opponent who prevailed after hitting double top.

“It’s the biggest payday of my career. I’ve put so much work in, and I’m so proud of myself," Lukeman said.

“I’m in the quarter-finals of a major. It’s crazy. I’m just going to take it game by game. I know I can beat anyone on my day and I’m riding a wave at the moment.”

Smith, who hit ten 180s during the match, took the opening set following consecutive finishes of 72 and 67, but Lukeman fought back to level.

The Watford player than claimed five legs on the spin to open up a 2-1 lead, but his opponent was not finished and made it 2-2 with a double eight after setting up the finish with a superb 174, before the dramatic conclusion to the contest.

Lukeman’s quarter-final against Aspinall is due to be the first on stage at 7pm, followed by Gerwyn Price v Madars Razma, Peter Wright v Dimitri Van den Bergh and themn Michael van Gerwen takes on Chris Dobey.
