The slow start and then Watford's failure to turn dominance into chances and win the game left head coach Rob Edwards frustrated.
“We put ourselves in a difficult position with a bad start to the game," he said.
"The first 20 minutes were not good enough, not just the goal we conceded: we didn’t compete well enough.
“You know what you’re going to get when you come to Rotherham, and I was very frustrated, and angry, with the way we started the game."
Edwards said he was baffled as to why his side were so slow out of the blocks.
“It’s certainly not what we tell them before the game. All the messages we gave were about what to expect. We knew, the players knew, and they didn’t stand up to it well enough," he said.
“The goal lifted Rotherham, they were able to play the game at their pace. They hit long balls, won the second balls and we didn’t compete. It took us 25 minutes to grow into the game."
Vakoun Bayo's superb volley got Watford level and after that they were the better side, without every really forcing too many saves.
“The equaliser from Bayo was excellent and then I’m thinking ‘ok, let’s go on and push things’," said Edwards.
“Second half we huffed and puffed, had a few chances and good moments, but not enough of them. We didn’t ask enough questions of their keeper.”
