If you talk to Luther Blissett it soon becomes evident that his passion for Watford and its people remains as strong as ever.
The former footballer’s place in the history of the town was assured years ago after his exceptional contribution to Watford Football Club. No one has scored more goals or played more games for the Hornets, and he will forever remain the first player from the club to win an England cap.
Luther was at the forefront of an era where being a Watford player was about much more than performing on the pitch. Under the leadership and vision of Graham Taylor, players were expected to be part of and give back to the community.
That sense of community responsibility has never left Luther but continuing Taylor’s legacy scaled new heights during the pandemic when he became one of the most visible faces in Watford’s effort to help those in need.
It is a measure of how rare it is to be granted the Freedom of the Borough that only three people held the honour until this week – Sir Elton John and Norman and Mavis Tyrwhitt. That officially became four on Monday and few would argue against Luther being a thoroughly deserving recipient.
Many congratulations, Luther.
