Watford are set to miss out on Henri Lansbury, who is due to leave Aston Villa for Bristol City, while their pursuit of Rennes' James Lea Siliki has hit a stumbling block.
Talks between the Hornets and the Ligue 1 side had initially been described as "positive" with a loan with an option to buy offer tabled earlier in the window.
However, sources close to Siliki have said that Rennes are unhappy about a regular instalment they believe should have been paid to them by now as part of the deal to bring Ismaila Sarr to Vicarage Road, and reports in France suggest they are reluctant to conclude any business that they believe has the potential to land them in a similar position.
A deal has still been described as "possible" with the player keen on the move, but is now looking increasingly unlikely with the transfer window closing on Monday.
Lansbury was seen as a more viable option, and has played for Watford before on loan, but Bristol City look to have pipped the Hornets, Reading and Stoke to his signature.
