Christian Kabasele has spoken about the positive feeling he had calling while Watford supporters to try and raise spirits, as the coronavirus pandemic sees people following increasingly stringent government guidelines and keeping themselves indoors.
Over half of the current playing squad and coaching staff, as well as several former players, volunteered to ring fans as part of the Hornets at Home initiative, to make sure they are safe and well and Kabasele said he was delighted to be able to give those people something else to think about.
"It was really good to speak with these fans," he said.
"They were so happy to talk to a Watford player. It was positive for them to have something new in their life. They said how kind it was from the club and when you hear them say these things, it makes you feel so positive and feel good. This is a tough moment for everybody and these calls give them something else to think about for a brief moment.
"We don't have contact with the fans apart from social media. You can't speak to them at the stadium, you can't give them a picture so this is the least we can do for them."
While calling the supporters was, on the whole, a positive experience for Kabasele, there was one moment that brought the severity of the situation into focus for him, when a supporter he called was unavailable to speak, due to being unwell with the virus.
"There were a couple of people I called who sadly had symptoms," he said.
"I was really sad, sad because I called one guy and I could only speak to his wife because he was really, really unwell. That was sad and I felt bad after I came off the call because there was nothing else I could do."
