Watford fighter Ellie Harber took her 2020 record to five wins from five, culminating last weekend at the IFMA Great Britain Team Trials at Watford’s Woodside Leisure Centre.
Harber, 14, won the Under-16 Muay Thai category at the youth event involving the best Muay Thai fighters from across the country, where the main prize was a spot on the team travelling to Bangkok for the World Youth Championships in September.
A tough semi-final draw saw Harber pitted against Aberdeen’s Ava Morrice, but it was a match-up she ultimately came through to set up a final against Izzy Embuido, who had previously won the category.
Harber’s success comes off the back of winning two UK World Kickboxing British Titles in Muay Thai and K1 at the beginning of February.
After winning the Watford tournament, Harber said: “Today was a tough day, as I knew I had to be my best to earn a place on the GB team, so I had to train hard all day but also stay strong.
“It’s not always easy, especially when you must compete in two fights in a short space of time, but this is what I love to do. I know I have got more in me so I look forward to improving in 2020.”
Manager Steve Harber added: “This has been a busy month for Ellie, but she has remained focussed and worked hard with her coaches to ensure she was in the best shape. I am incredibly proud of her and look forward to seeing what she can do this year.”
