These are encouraging times for Oxhey Jets after they battled to a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Leighton Town on Saturday, a result that means the South Oxhey club top the early season table in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division.
Tim O’Sullivan’s side had the better of the early exchanges and should have taken the lead after just four minutes, but the usually prolific Nick Kerley fired against the bar from close range.
In a solid defensive display, Jets had their work cut out to return home with something to show for their efforts after Andy Brennan was sent off with 35 minutes to play.
However a spirited showing ensured they made it four league games unbeaten with plenty of positives to take moving forward.
But Jets' promising league form has yet to be replicated in cup competition after they were beaten 2-1 by Baldock Town in the League Challenge Trophy on Tuesday, following on from earlier defeats in the Herts Charity Shield and the FA Cup over the past month.
Bovingdon continued their flying start to life in Division Two after a pair of victories last weekend made it five unbeaten to keep them at the top of the pile with 13 points from a possible 15.
Martin Standen’s side thrashed Unite MK 5-1 on Saturday despite falling behind to a fifth-minute goal at Green Lane.
They turned the scoreline around though, thanks to a blistering second-half performance. After James Lawrence’s first-half leveller, goals from Stephan Dodds, Jamie Eames, Ed Canham and Matt Standen confirmed an emphatic win.
On Monday, meanwhile, Bovingdon triumphed 3-0 in a village derby with Sarratt, who are also playing their first season in the division.
The win arrived courtesy of strikes from Jay Wilson and a brace from Dodds as Bovy made it four wins from five matches.
Tring Athletic had to make do with a point after a pulsating 3-3 draw with London Tigers at the Grass Roots Stadium on Saturday, but they remain unbeaten in the Premier Division.
In a topsy-turvy encounter where the lead changed hands a number of times, Tring took the lead courtesy of Mark Riddick’s 10th-minute header.
The visitors struck back thanks to two efforts from Paulo Alves, before Billie Busari levelled for Athletic.
Ian Richardson’s side then found themselves in front at the break when Ashton Campbell slotted home late in the half to hand Tring a slender 3-2 advantage.
However nine minutes into the second half, the scoring was complete when Yuness En-Nouru netted for Tigers.
Tring’s League Challenge Trophy tie with London Colney was postponed on Tuesday, however, following floodlight failure.
Leverstock Green were in FA Cup action last weekend and set up an all-South Midlands First Qualifying Round tie with Hadley on Saturday, September 8 after thumping Harpenden Town 6-0.
Braces from Shane Wood and Alex Witham were complemented by strikes from Mark Smith and Chris Blunden to comfortably seal their passage through to the next round.
