Cardiff City are targeting a move for Watford captain Troy Deeney before the transfer window closes next Thursday.

The Watford Observer understands that the Welsh club’s interest is genuine as they look to add depth to their attacking ranks before the season commences on August 11.

It is unclear how much City are likely to have to pay to sign the 30-year-old, but the Hornets are believed to have rejected a £20 million offer for Deeney from Leicester City 12 months ago.

The number nine’s form was indifferent last season as he scored just six goals to record his lowest return since Watford were promoted to the Premier League in 2015.

Given Watford’s lack of attacking options – they have just Deeney, Stefano Okaka and Andre Gray as recognised senior strikers – selling a player who still has plenty to offer at this time would be a gamble for the Vicarage Road club.

Deeney is one of the top earners at Watford and his wages could also present a stumbling block for any move to Cardiff taking place.

When recently quizzed on transfer business between now and the end of the season, Watford boss Javi Gracia kept his cards close to his chest.

The Spaniard did, however, confirm that he was happy with the make-up of his squad and believes the players currently at his disposal have the quality to perform well in the 2018/19 campaign.

He said: “Whether we get new players in or not, we are going to be a good team with identity, soul and the energy to compete in the Premier League.”
