Callum Shinkwin would like to see a European Tour event played at The Grove every year, hailing it as “the perfect venue” for a big tournament.
The Moor Park Golf Club professional is on two-under-par at the British Masters after shooting a third round 69 this morning. Although the venue would be ideal for Shinkwin given the proximity to his Bushey home, he believes it is “ideal for everyone”.
“It seems like a normal event, if anything a little bit better,” the 23-year-old said when asked how he thought the British Masters was progressing. “There’s a lot more space to here to have a tournament. It’s a great venue for a good tournament and it’s had one in the past as well.”
That event was the World Golf Championship, American Express Championship in 2006 and Shinkwin continued: “It would be good if we could have one every year up here on the European Tour. I think they should because it’s the perfect venue for it. They can get the course in great condition and it’s an ideal venue for everyone, it’s near everything.
“You get good galleries here as you will see for the final few groups. It will be lined every hole but you’ve got everything you need here. You’ve got the hotel, you’ve got the town centre and you’ve got London nearby as well with the tube.”
Having made the cut with a birdie at the 18th yesterday, Shinkwin bogeyed the par three fourth but was soon back on level par with a birdie at the par four fifth.
Back-to-back birdies at the par four 10th and 11th moved the former English Amateur champion to two-under, only for him to let one of those shots slip at the par four 12th.
Five consecutive pars followed before Shinkwin reached the 18th in two to give himself a good chance of eagle. That putt slipped by, but he made the fourth birdie of his round to put himself back on two-under going into tomorrow’s last 18 holes.
“It was quite a good round,” he said. “I played quite nicely. I didn’t hole as many putts as I would have liked to but I’m pleased with it.”
