Hornets youngster George Byers’ proposed loan move to Rapid Bucharest fell through as the Romanian club failed to discuss personal terms with the midfielder, the Watford Observer understands.
The 19-year-old became a surprise target for Bucharest, who are currently top of the second division, after he impressed the club’s manager, Dan Alexa, during the Nagjee Cup earlier this month.
Byers captained Watford to a 2-0 win over Rapid during the tournament in India and we understand Alexa sounded out Hornets Under-21 boss Harry Kewell after that game to talk about the midfielder.
Bucharest decided to pursue a loan move for Byers ahead of the Romanian transfer window closing on Monday evening.
The second year pro was believed to be very keen on the move in order to play first-team football, however, Rapid failed to contact Byers or his representative to discuss terms.
The Romanian transfer window closed without any further progress being made and the deal fell through.
Byers, who has played for Watford since the age of seven, has made one first team appearance for the Golden Boys, coming on as an 82nd minute in last season’s 5-0 win over Charlton Athletic.
