THE Watford manager may send Clarke Carlisle out on loan in an effort to get the defender some match practice - but Aidy Boothroyd insists he will not rush back Marlon King.
Last season's top scorer hinted in an interview that he may return to action before the end of the season but Boothroyd is taking no chances with his prized asset who only begun his rehabilitation last week following knee surgery in October.
"He's on the long road to recovery but the injury will strengthen his resolve and make him a lot tougher," Boothroyd said.
"I don't envisage him playing this season and I won't rush him back.
"We must make sure he is 100 per cent right and he's only just started his rehab having had complete rest for so long," he added. "I'm gutted for him as he's not getting a chance to play but he'll get his chance next season."
Carlisle, meanwhile, can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel following ten months out with a thigh problem. The popular defender surprised the watching Boothroyd by lasting the full 90 minutes against Charlton Reserves on Tuesday night and Carlisle will now be keen to get as many games under his belt as possible.
"He looked very rusty, but he got through the 90 and I'm really pleased for him," said the manager. "It's not been easy for him as he missed out on the promotion and then on the Premiership.
"But it's important we don't rush him or push him too soon. He must be right before he comes back into contention.
"I may consider getting him out on loan."
Boothroyd is clearly looking forward to welcoming back a player whose infectious personality and leadership skills have such a positive influence on the rest of the squad.
"He was a great signing for us both on and off the pitch," said the manager. "He's a terrific character and just the sort you want in your dressing room.
"He's had some real knock backs but he's a model professional and managed to come through it," Boothroyd remarked.
