Watford Water Polo Club Seconds lost 18-12 to a Bexley side which included two former Team GB Olympians on Tuesday evening.
Despite boasting the class of Sean King and Jack Waller, both of whom had represented Team GB at the 2012 Games in London, Bexley fell behind to Irish international Ciaran Walshe inside 15 seconds.
However, Watford’s brief lead stung the hosts into action, with King and Waller both scoring to put the Kent outfit into a 4-1 lead.
Two further strikes followed before Walshe snatched his second to make it 6-2.
In the second period Bexley’s Waller completed his hat-trick but Watford quickly replied via Jamie Bailey and Walshe to move within five points, trailing 9-4.
Waller then scored again after receiving a pass from King, only for Jack Pickford to grab two further goals, reducing the deficit once more.
Bexley scored again to give the home side an 11-6 lead at half time.
The third period followed a similar pattern, with Waller proving the difference. Goals from Neil Haftel and Walshe were not enough as Bexley took a 15-8 lead.
Watford won the final period 4-3 thanks to efforts from Alun Dorrington (2), Walshe and Pickford but Bexley did enough to seal the win by six points.
