This transfer window Watford put the call out, SOS. Save our season.
Up stepped Daniel Tozser.
The Hungarian international and expert dead ball specialist joined last week and has two years worth of Champions League experience.
So when he stepped on to the pitch at the Vic on Sunday expectations were high. But boy did he deliver.
Tozser is no Andreas Iniesta, however, he is the exact type of midfielder Watford need.
The way he linked up with the squad against Brighton shows his quality and maybe, just maybe, with his influence we could make the playoffs (fingers and toes crossed).
Tozser could join a long list of influential loan signings that Watford have been able to capture over the years and this got me wondering who has been the best loan coup for the Golden Boys in recent seasons?
Obviously every fan will have their own opinion and personally I could probably come up with a list as long as an NBA players arm. But I’ll I will keep it to three.
The first is Matej Vydra. Boo, why are you bringing him up again? (Calm down, we’ll move on quickly.) The fact of the matter is Vydra deserves to be in this list because he had everything a top striker could ask for.
He could bring the ball down well, his speed left defenders in his wake and his shot seemed inch perfect.
He had an incredible season at Watford and scored 20 goals. While he didn’t manage to produce that moment of magic we were all hoping for in the Championship Play-off final, he did have a very big part in getting us there, which is credit in itself.
My next choice is Tom Cleverley. When Tom joined us initially he seemed to be another young’un from United who would maybe get a game or two before eventually being signed by Sheffield United or similar.
However, after a few games it became clear to most of us that this lad was different.
His touch on the ball was truly spectacular and he played with an experience that didn’t seem possible considering his tender age of 20.
In many ways Tom was the perfect midfielder he could pick a pass and had an eye for goal. It wasn’t a surprise that he eventually ended up winning Watford’s player of the season.
My third choice is tight. I could pick another outfielder like Nathaniel Chalobah, Adam Johnson, Henri Lansbury or Chris Eagles who all who impressed whilst on loan at the Horns.
But I’ve gone for a goalkeeper who has since gone on to keep goal for England.
Of course I am talking about Ben Foster, who liked it at Watford so much he stayed for a second season on loan.
Ben was part of the famously well-organized squad led by Aidy Boothroyd that won promotion to the Premier League in 2006.
I was very impressed when I saw him in goal for Watford and his Premier League qualities shone through instantly.
His aerial abilities were particularly on show and it wasn’t long before the Sir Alex recognized these talents and made him his number one at United.
Unfortunately for Ben it didn’t work out for him during that season and he slowly moved down the pecking order before being moved on.
But he has since recaptured his best form playing for the likes of Birmingham and West Brom.
So they’re my favourite loan signings, but as I said earlier I could have picked more. Who would you choose? Comment below.
