Following a query about Deacon's Hill, Mrs W Few of 108 Greenfield Avenue, Carpenders Park, wrote in.
TOMMY DEACON had a mill on the River Colne. The leafy lane going uphill from the mill was Tommy Deacon's Hill later shortened to Deacon's.
Before the days of coal there were water mills about every quarter of a mile, mainly producing paper around here, such as Hamper Mill.
The first one down stream from Tommy's was Silk Mill (Silk Mill Road). Before Tesco was built there was a mill stream from Water Lane to Lower High Street to Oxhey Park.
There was a mill behind the garage that is situated on the east side of the Lower High Street.
