Dorothy Woodward of Watford, write in concerning a newsagent's shop in Watford High Street.

I SET out below some comments which may be of interest to the readers of the Nostalgia page: I would like to clear up one or two misleading comments which have appeared in the correspondence about the newsagents shop in the High Street, between the Three Crowns and the One Crown.

It did belong to my father, Arthur Grimsdell, and he also had two other shops, one in Vicarage Road and one in St Albans Road.

He started his football career playing for Watford and District School Boys and Watford Football Club.

As your correspondents have rightly said, he then played for Tottenham Hotspur and England, captaining both teams, and leading Tottenham to their victory in the 1921 Cup Final.

He became a director of Watford Football Club in the 1950's and was a season ticket holder until his death in 1963. He played cricket for West Herts and Hertfordshire for many years, as a wicket keeper and batsman.

He had two sons, Alan and Bill, and a daughter, Dorothy. Both Alan and Bill played rugby for the Harlequins, although Bill did play football for Cassiobury Wanderers before changing codes.

They both played County rugby, Bill for Hertfordshire and Alan for Middlesex. Alan went on to become Treasurer of the Rugby Football Union for several years and in 1986/7 was President of the RFU.

They both played cricket for West Herts, although not professionally as suggested by one correspondent. Bill sadly died in 1992.

Most of the sporting abilities of the family belonged to my father and brothers, but I did manage to win the occasional tennis tournament at the two local clubs I belonged to!
