It’s Tuesday morning and Paul Brooks and his dedicated team of volunteers are hard at work laying tables and preparing food for the OAP lunch club held in the Abbots Langley Baptist Church Hall.

The 56-year-old London cabbie has been running the monthly event for four-and-a-half years but has been involved with the church for significantly longer.

The event, one of many organised by Paul and held in the church hall, provides a lifeline for elderly village residents, giving them an opportunity to socialise, chat and enjoy a freshly prepared meal with friends.

The lunch club takes place on the last Tuesday of every month and regularly attracts 20 to 30 guests but Paul is keen to get more of the village’s older residents involved.

He said: "It’s not about trying to ‘church’ people, we are trying to encourage them to get out and meet people."
