A teenager from Bushey marked his birthday in an usual way this year - by acting as a torchbearer in the Olympic Torch Relay.

Christian Aquino, of Springfield, pipped numerous entries to be selected for the honour after he was nominated by his mother Stephanie at the end of last year.

The St Joan of Arc pupil, who took part in the relay on Wednesday, July 25, said: "It was brilliant.

"On the journey to Barnet I was really nervous, I kept thinking that I might drop the torch or fall over.

"But when it came to the relay in Hendon Lane, I was fine, I sort of relaxed and I managed to run the whole way - not too fast as I wanted to enjoy the moment.

"There were so many people there to cheer me on, I felt like I was famous."

Christian was also given the opportunity to meet London Mayor Boris Johnson and Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint.

The 13-year-old said: "Boris congratulated all of the relay runners, but I got to have a chat with Rupert, who was taking part in the relay.

"He was really nice, he told me about what it is like to be a film star. I wouldn’t mind being in a movie."

Although Christian’s birthday fell on July 27, two days after he took part in the relay, he said he had included it in his birthday celebrations as it was such a memorable occasion.

Christian also attended the torchbearer finale concert at Hyde Park in London on July 26, where the likes of Dizzee Rascal performed.

He said: "I can’t believe that I’m a part of history, it feels great.

"My mum and dad have bought a stand for the torch and we’re going to display it proudly in the house. I’ll also be keeping my uniform as a memento.

"I wouldn’t want to part with either for all the money in the world, I want my future children and grandchildren to see it and know that I took part."
