A lorry carrying buffet food burst into flames while driving through Croxley Green today.

The driver pulled into the entrance of the Rickmansworth and Watford Sea Cadets off the Two Bridges roundabout in Watford Road at around 3.30pm after other motorists alerted him to the fact his vehicle was on fire.

The lorry driver escaped unharmed but the vehicle was engulfed by the flames and smoke could be seen as far as the Watford ring road.

Two fire engines from Watford and Garston stations attended the blaze and police help direct traffic around the roundabout, which was partially blocked by emergency vehicles.

Lee Haward, Watford White Watch commander, said the lorry was well alight by the time firefighters reached it.

He said: "We had two firefighters in breathing apparatus and two hose reels on it. It took around 15 minutes to put out and the remainder was damping down."

The fire is currently being treated as accidental.

The lorry was reportedly carrying the buffet food and equipment to a funeral and had hot plate heaters on board.
