Enterprising children from Water Lane in Watford got into the Olympic spirit yesterday with a toy sale.

Andrew and Emma, eight and six respectively set up a stall in their front garden, selling toys and cakes so that they could buy souvenir Olympic mascots Wenlock and Mandeville.

Emma, who attends Bushey and Oxhey Infants, said: "I made some cakes with mummy and we have been selling them for 20p each.

"I don’t mind selling my old toys, they get boring when you play with them lots."

The duo managed to raise £20, selling fairy cakes, teddy bears, old bikes and other toys they no longer wanted.

Any leftover items will be donated to a charity shop to sell.

According to mother Laura Godfrey, not only will they now be able to purchase their toy mascots, but they have learned a valuable lesson about money.

The 42-year-old said: "Selling our old toys on the lawn is fast becoming something of a tradition- Andrew started doing it last year and the pair of them really enjoy getting involved in school fairs, selling bits and bobs.

"Apart from helping clear out stuff we no longer want in the house, getting them to sell their old toys nurtures an entrepreneurial spirit - they learn about the importance of money, that you can’t just have what you want all the time, you have to earn it.

"Who knows, perhaps we’ve got a couple of Alan Sugars on our hands."
